Surface Tension Balance Searl's  [107.01 PH]
Approximately 275 mm length with cast metal bridge mounted on tripod stand adjustable for height & having a levelling knurled head screw fitted on one foot. The bridge has raised end pieces to which are screwed small metal blocks securing either end of a plated steel torsion wire. One block disc slotted to facilitate adjustment for torsion of the wire by means of screw passing through the end piece. At the centre of the wire, a small clamp is fitted carrying a light weight metal pointer with an adjustable counterpoise. From a notch near the tip of the pointer is suspended a small weight pan with a hook fitted to its underside, to hold either wire frame 80 x 25 mm or a metal clip carrying a glass microscope slide 75 x 25 x 1.5 mm. The tip of the pointer moves over a graduated vertical scale complete with set of weights 1 mgm to 1 gm.

Kinetic Theory Model  [107.4 PH]

The apparatus consists of a clear perspex tube 380 mm long & 50 mm outer diameter provided with a light, freely sliding expanded polystyrene piston & a loose fitting metal cap. The tube is mounted by means of a bayonet type fitting in a metal cap, upon a polished wood motor housing 170 x 170 x 130 mm. A low voltage DC motor is contained in the housing & is coupled to crank driven agitator. The push rod of the agitator carries a light plastic piston which oscillates in the lower end of the tube. The apparatus is supplied complete with 3 mm diameter metal spheres & four cardboard loading discs.

For demonstrating Brownian motion. Designed for use with a microscope. A short cylindrical cell, closed by a cover glass, is held vertically in an opaque channel 90 x 90 x 30 mm. To demonstrate thermal expansion. Comprising a brass ball 25 mm diameter, a brass ring mounted on a rod with a wooden handle, a chain is provided to hold the ball with the ring. The ball passes through the ring when cold but does not after being heated.

To show force of contraction or expansion. A heavy cast iron base with 4 uprights, on one end of which is fitted a hand nut, the other drilled with holes to carry a cast iron rod of 75 x 6 mm size bearing against narrow flats.

Linear Expansion Apparatus  [107.11 PH]
The elongation of rod is measured by a micrometer screw. The brass tube is 500 x 25 mm C.P. With inlet & outlet tubes for steam & opening for thermometer reading to 1 x 110C. The binding posts are provided on the supports for connecting a belt, buzzer, or galvanometer for indicating the exact point of contact of the screw. Expansion Apparatus Gunther  [107.12 PH]

With two cast end pieces jointed by three nickel plated rods which carry two sliding V supports for a glass jacket with inlet & outlet tubes. One end piece fitted with spherometer reading to 0.005 mm & the other with contact screw. The glass jacket enclose both a brass & a copper rod each 500 x 6 mm fitted through corks, a half turn of the jacket changing the rod in contact with the spherometer. A thermometer can be attached to either side of the rods by rubber bands. Brass terminals are fitted to the apparatus so that an electrical circuit can be made through either rod to indicate the moment of contact of centre tube & spherometer.

Expansion of Liquids Apparatus  [107.13 PH]
To show the differences in expansion of different liquids over the same temperature. Comprising five bulb tubes with plastic scales, mounted in a frame & supported in a G.I. sheet water trough 240 x 100 x 75 mm deep. For determining maximum density of water, made of G.I. sheet cylinder 50 mm diameter x 300 mm height mounted on a base having two tubulators for thermometers, with a gallery of 60 mm x 150 mm for placing mixture of ice & salt. Charle's Law Apparatus  [107.21 PH]
With a glass U tube with a bulb & tap at the upper end of one limb, other limb open. From the bottom of the U is an outlet tube which passes through a bung & terminates into a tap. The bulb has a capacity of 7 cm & the stem beneath is graduated 3 x 0.1 cm allowing for expansion over a range of 100C. The apparatus can be supported by a single clamp & only 20 cm of mercury is required.
Constant Volume Air Thermometer  [107.22 PH]
Consists of a polished teakwood stand approx. 750 mm high fitted with a wooden scale reading from 0 to 60 cm x 1 mm & supporting an adjustable mercury reservoir by a metal rod. A detachable air thermometer bulb about 70 mm diameter connected via three way stop cock to mercury tube with zero index fused inside its upper end. A metal vessel surrounding the bulb supported by detachable metal shelf mounted on insulated asbestos screen. Mounted on a teakwood stand with a deep tray which serves to catch any mercury spilled accidentally from the reservoir. Supplied complete with 1 meter of rubber pressure tubing 10 mm outer diameter & 5 mm bore for connecting the reservoir to the bulb.
